Birthing from Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation

This wonderful book explores pain management in labour in all kind of ways. Pain has so much to do with our brain perception. Have you noticed how some non-physical pain can really hurt, sometimes more than phisycal pain? Why are some women dealing through contractions better than others?

I don’t believe in the “no pain level” stuff. My mother is always saying that my pain level is extremely low. However I birthed my baby without any drugs or pain relief. It also has to do with your mind.

Pam England, in her book Birthing from Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation talks about a simple exercise she’s doing in her birthing preparation classes. Put an ice cube on the inside of your wrist for 30 seconds. It hurts. Your mind is focused on the pain. Now put it again while you share jokes with your partner. Are the 30 seconds already finished?

Birthing from Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation also explains how to deal with our inner fears which can block labour: “even paper tigers can bite”. We should really let go in our mind to birth our baby smoothly.

Pam England illustrates her book with drawings from the pregnant women she met in her classes. It’s also an invitation to be creative yourself to explore your ideas and inner feelings about birth and labour.
